The 30th of March, inside the program of XX CÁTEDRA EUROPA, the Universidad del Norte at Baranquilla (Colombia) has been held a roundtable related the Biodiversity safeguard, genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge in Latin America: implementing Nagoya Protocol.
The following is the abstract of the roundtable:
Latin America is the region with the greatest biological diversity on the planet. America Latin Countries, Local community, native populations during the centuries have preserved biodiversity, germplasm and traditional knowledge associated with genetic resources. It has been frequent that the rights of property of Indigenous Peoples and American Latin Countries over their genetic resources and traditional knowledge related to genetic resources have been affected in negative form. The genetic resources and traditional knowledge related to genetic resources have been used, spread and reproduced without the authorization of his owners by foreign persons, reducing the control of the indigenous peoples and American Latin Countries on their own culture and biodiversity.
The mainly objective of the Roundtable, in striking collaboration with Latin America scholars and prof. John Alberto Tito-Añamuro, is implement international tools on Biodiversity, also concerning practical application between the European Union and Latin America. The Roundtable is based, also, on the experience European Union and, especially, on investigation results made in the frame of an EU project “Bioresources For Oliviculture_BeFOre” granted by EU Horizon-2020 MSC-RISE. The project aims at establishing a multi-lateral network of research and innovation staff active in germplasm access, conservation, evaluation, and exploitation, also taking into consideration the “Access and Benefit-Sharing” mechanism under the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture and the Convention on Biological Diversity and its Nagoya Protocol.
