It belongs to the he research unit UMR AGAP (mix unit between CIRAD, INRA and SUPAGRO) regrouping about 150 scientists (350 peoples including non-permanent staff) involved in the analysis of the genetic diversity and molecular mechanisms of plant adaptation to environment (biotic and abiotic stresses) under the general goal of plant breeding. The olive research program is conducted by the AFEF-AGAP team that has a longstanding research experience on olive genetics.
Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique World Olive Germplasm of Marrakech (OWGB) The (OWGB) of Marrakech includes 561 accessions from 14 Mediterranean countries. Using 12 nuclear microsatellites (SSRs) and three chloroplast DNA markers, this collection was characterized to examine the structure of the genetic diversity and propose a set of olive accessions encompassing the whole 505 SSR profiles based on a total of 210 alleles were identified. Based on these markers, the genetic diversity was similar to that of cultivars and wild olives which were previously characterized in another study indicating that OWGB Marrakech is representative of Mediterranean olive germplasm.

Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) hosts two (2) schools divided into six (6) departments. The University has a number of research groups dealing with trees, while few of them are studying olive. The group concerned with this project works with plant molecular biology, development, physiology, biochemistry, fatty acid biosynthesis, seed proteins, cell biology, metabolism of secondary products, and genetics and specifically on olive at the molecular, genetic and physiological level. To develop and advance methodologies and protocols, to genotype domesticated resources and to characterize genes and molecular approaches in relation to oil quantity and quality profiles. Many PhD students and postdoctoral fellows carry out active research in the fields named above. These activities are successful through the establishment of national and international competitive research networks and collaborations with the industry.
